What is the Decibel (dB)

The yardstick of acoustics. Decibels measure relative acoustic energy using logarithmic curves rather than linear numbers.

A logarithmic unit, not linear

Human ears don't process sound linearly. If sound volume doubled every time air pressure doubled, your ears would explode at a concert or hear nothing in a library. Instead, your auditory system works on a scale modeled by the Decibel.

+3 dB Increase

Doubles the **electrical energy/power** of your signal. Critical when balancing amplifier headroom.

+6 dB Increase

Doubles the **sound pressure level (SPL)** pushing against air and physical microphone diaphragms.

+10 dB Increase

Perceived by the human brain as **exactly twice as loud** as the original source signal.
